What is the ruling on Islamic (so-called) types of loans (in place of mortgage)?

Once cannot simply say 'HALAL' because they say it is...in fact, many Islamic loans are so anti-Islamic and even are worse, and I mean far worse, than normal bank loans...so be AWARE!

What determines a loan as Halal or Haram? It definitely isn't the look of the sale's person or his ...attire (who tries to stick it to you)...instead look at the fine print. Ask them for all the details, and my favorite area of inspection, 'what happens if I default on my payment?' Here you can clearly distinguish what is Halal from what is Haram! I would definitely encourage you, that you go to a sheik who understands these matters and go over the fine print and then ask him to give you his take on the matter. Each contract is different so no 'blanket' ruling can be given in the matter... may Allah bless you. Ameen

Can you please enlighten us on the differences on praying witr, especially with the Hanafi Madth'hab...which is more correct?

To answer this we go to the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet, may Allah praise him. He performed witr in a set of two, with tasleem at the end, and then got up and made one individual rakah with a tasleem at the end. This is authentically rep...orted.
There is also the second method, which was witnessed by his companions...they saw the Prophet, may Allah praise him, perform three together as one unit, but with only one Ta'shah'hud, at the very end.
As for what many do in various masjid in our area and elsewhere, where the witr is performed like Maghrib this is not correct...why? Its in the Hadeeth. The Prophet, may Allah praise him, said: "Do not perform Witr as you would perform Maghrib." (Hakim - Authentic).
For those of you who attended the course, I mentioned that the Hanafi madth'hab doesn't give baseless rulings! They have mentioned the witr is to be performed like Maghrib, and that it should not be performed as one alone.
The proofs are as follows:
1. The Messenger of Allah would perform three for witr and say the salam at the end of the three.
2. They narrate narrations that speak of the prohibition of performing one.

In terms of these proofs, the first is a general proof which doesn't negate the hadeeth we have mentioned above....perform three but with one ta'shahhud. As for the second proof used to indicate the inappropriateness of praying one single rakah, it is absolutely weak.

On the issue of Makruh, please clarify the issue of eating shellfish, since some Hanafis consider it to be Makruh?

As I said, no opinion held by one of the great scholars is without proof. The Hanafi scholars who hold this view state that Allah has prohibited 'khabeeth' (impure) meats upon this Ummah. Also, Allah says: "The Maitah (animals that die on their own accord), blood and pork are prohibited." Since no distinction in these verses has been made regarding whether they are land or sea animals one should abstain from eating what is doubtful. There are dogs, cats, pigs of the sea (as known in Arabic)...as well there are snakes and other forms of life that one should not eat.

The Majority opinion states otherwise; it is lawful to consume that which lives exclusively in the ocean. The Prophet, may Allah praise him, said: "The ocean's water is pure and its dead sea-life permissible for you to eat."
As for amphibians, that eat flesh, they are prohibited and what must abstain from eating them. So no croc burgers!

If Muharram means haram, does that mean that there is something different or special about the month of Muharram in the Hijri month?

The first month of the Hijri calendar is called 'Muharram', because before the advent of Islam the Arabs had a common norm among all the tribes...no fighting, no raids and no attacks in this month. On account of this, they called it 'Muharram' (i.e. meaning Haram to fight...etc.)
Allah also calls it Muharram and it is among the four inviolable months of the Islamic Calendar...Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qid'ah and Dhul-Hijjah.

Whats the ruling on hunting moose, deer, elk, etc. Can you shoot with a rifle or use a bow? Is this Haram (the meat would be used for eating)?

If you shoot the game animal with your rifle/shotgun/cannon/arrow and you mentioned the name of Allah upon firing and the animal died from that shot, it is Halal.
If you find it still alive, you should then slaughter it properly.

The Prophet, may Allah praise him, said: "What causes the blood to flow (in terms of tools used for slaughtering) and the name of Allah has been mentioned, you can eat from it." (Bukhari)
